Where to Get Seattle Birth Records

King County Vital Statistics is the county-level office for Seattle birth records. The office is at 201 S. Jackson St Suite 220 in Seattle. It is open Monday through Friday during regular business hours. In-person requests are handled the same day in most cases. You walk in, fill out a form, show your ID, pay, and leave with a certified copy. For parking, the King Street Garage offers the first hour free. That makes a quick visit fairly simple if you live or work near downtown.

There are four ways to request a Seattle birth certificate from King County Vital Statistics. First, you can walk in to the Jackson Street office for same-day service. Second, a self-service kiosk is available at the same location and costs $28.50 per certificate. The kiosk is useful when the counter line is long. Third, you can call 1-888-273-4623 to order by phone. Fourth, online orders go through VitalChek and take four to five business days to process, not counting delivery time. The county's online ordering page is at kingcounty.gov - Order Birth Certificate. That page has current fee details and instructions for each method.

Seattle is the largest city in Washington State with roughly 750,000 residents. It is the county seat of King County, which means all county vital records services are located here. If you are requesting a record for someone born in a smaller King County city, you still come to this same office. The Seattle address handles King County as a whole.

Washington became a closed-record state for birth certificates on January 1, 2021. The change happened under RCW 70.58A. That law limits certified copies to eligible requestors. If you are 18 or older and named on the record, you can get a copy. Parents and legal guardians can request records for minors. Adult children, adult siblings, and grandparents with a documented need may also qualify. Attorneys acting on behalf of an eligible party can request records too. Certain government agencies are permitted access for official purposes.

When you visit in person, bring a current government-issued photo ID. A Washington driver's license, state ID card, U.S. passport, military ID, or tribal ID all work. You fill out a request form at the counter. If you are ordering for someone else, bring proof of your relationship. This could be your own birth certificate showing your parent's name, a guardianship document, or similar paperwork. Staff will review what you provide and let you know if anything is missing before you pay.

Mail-in requests follow the same rules. Send a completed application, a photocopy of your ID, and payment by check or money order. Mail requests take longer than walk-in visits. Processing volume at the Seattle office is high given the city's size. Plan for a few weeks if you choose to mail your request.

Note: Informational copies are available to anyone but carry a statement that they are not valid for legal use. You need a certified copy for passports, school enrollment, and most official purposes.

Washington DOH and Seattle Birth Records

The Washington State Department of Health at doh.wa.gov is the state-level source for Seattle birth records. The DOH Center for Health Statistics holds statewide birth records from 1907 forward. You can reach them by email at ContactCHS@doh.wa.gov or by phone at 360-236-4300. Mail and online orders are both available. State processing times run longer than King County's in-person service. If you need a record quickly and can visit the Seattle office, the county is the faster route.

The state office is useful if you cannot get to Seattle or prefer to handle everything by mail. Both King County Vital Statistics and the DOH hold Seattle birth records from 1907 onward. The choice often comes down to which is more convenient. Some people find it easier to order from the state online rather than travel to the county office. Either source produces a valid certified copy.

King County Archives and Seattle Birth Records History

The King County Archives holds birth records from the pre-state registration period. Seattle birth records from 1890 to 1894 and 1907 are available there, as are King County birth records from 1891 to 1907. These older records were registered locally before the state centralized vital records collection. The King County Archives page at kingcounty.gov - Archives Birth Records describes what they hold and how to search those collections.

For broader Washington State historical records, the Washington State Digital Archives at digitalarchives.wa.gov is a free online database. It indexes county-level vital records, including some early King County birth registrations. The Puget Sound Regional Archives, part of the Washington State Archives system at sos.wa.gov/archives, also holds local government records that can help with genealogy research. Property files, voter rolls, and historical county documents sometimes fill gaps when a formal birth record is missing or incomplete.

Seattle Birth Records for Adoptees

Washington State law was updated to allow adult adoptees access to their original birth certificates. Under current rules, adoptees who are 18 or older can request their original birth record without needing a court order. This applies to people born in Seattle. The Washington State DOH handles these requests. You apply through the vital records office at doh.wa.gov. The process is the same as a standard birth record request in terms of where to apply, but adoptees may need to fill out a different form.

The Washington State Library also maintains a genealogy guide that covers birth records and adoptee resources. You can find it at washstatelib.libguides.com. The guide points to multiple sources including the DOH, county archives, and historical society collections. For Seattle families researching adoption records or confirming family history, the library guide is a good place to start.

Note: Contact placement agencies or the DOH Adoption Unit if you need information about intermediary services or contact preference forms related to Seattle adoptee birth records.
